Data Analyst Portfolio Projects

Hey friends,

I’m so excited to be releasing the very first newsletter. Thanks for joining me and I hope to add value to your data journey. One of the best ways to get a data analyst job is by showcasing your data analyst skills. You can do this through work experience and projects. A strong data analyst project highlights not only technical skills but your ability to think like a data analyst.

How do you think like a data analyst?

Tip 1: Use the Problem framework from my video to identify the starting point for your projects. Think about who is the audience, why do they want to analyze the data, and what metrics you can use to solve the goal. This will guide your project.

For example, let’s say you have a dataset of student exam scores:

  • Audience: Teachers

  • Goal: Identify the best teaching method to improve student scores.

  • Metrics: Average exam scores by teaching methods (lectures, interactive sessions, and online learning). Add in Factors like student engagement to see if it impacts exam scores as well.

  • Scope: The data analysis scope for a teaching analysis project involves exploring student feedback, exam results, and teaching methods to recommend the most effective teaching method.

Tip 2: If you’re having trouble thinking of goals and metrics, use Chat GPT. You can use the below prompts:

  • “Act as a data analyst working on a project for a teacher with a dataset of student exam scores. What would be the goal from the analysis?”

  • “What are different metrics and KPIs to identify effective teaching methods”

Tip 3: Choose a Manageable Scope. Don’t choose overly complex topics and datasets. Choose something you already understand that allows you to focus on learning and building the data analysis skills.
