How much SQL should you know?

Common questions about SQL

Hey friends,

A common question I get asked is how much SQL do you need to know as a data analyst?? I’ll be answering this below so that you have insight into SQL and what a data analyst does.

SQL for Data Analysts

  1. How much SQL do you need to know as a data analyst?

Data is stored in databases and SQL (structured Query Language) allows data analysts to talk to databases to analyze data. Of all the technical skills that a data analyst should know, SQL is the most fundamental skill because it allows them to access, manipulate, and analyze data. In terms of how much SQL a data analyst should know, I would say about an intermediate level. It is highly likely that you’ll have a SQL technical assessment when you interview for jobs and the best way to prepare for them is by doing practice SQL tests.

Watch Data Analyst Interview Questions as I go through a SQL interview question. I would recommend you be able to do beginner to intermediate level SQL questions. Below are some resources to practice:

Interview Query - Interview questions organized by level and data job type. These questions are very similar to the ones I’ve seen in my SQL interview questions.

DataCamp - One of the resources I’ve personally used to learn SQL. What I like about it is that it’s hand-on and you can practice the syntax on the platform rather than just watching videos.
